Interep Co-sponsors Radio Ink's 1st Hispanic Radio Conference

Presents "Power of Hispanic Radio" Panel Focusing on Spanish-language Radio's "Engagement" with the U.S. Hispanic Community

Interep (IREP.PK) was a major sponsor of Radio Ink’s recent Hispanic Radio Conference held in San Antonio on May 22nd and 23rd. The event kicked off with opening remarks by Spanish Broadcasting System CEO Raul Alarcon, who stated that the single most important factor for running a successful Hispanic radio station in today’s environment was engagement with its listeners. The importance of engagement was a reoccurring theme throughout the conference.

Interep’s CEO, Dave Kennedy, introduced the event’s keynote speaker, Henry Cisneros, who served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development during the Clinton administration, and was the former President and COO of Univision. Cisneros captivated the crowd with a list of recently updated Census figures showing the tremendous growth rates in the U.S. Hispanic population, which underscored its growing importance to U.S. marketers. Among other statistics cited, Cisneros pointed out that between 2000 and 2006 the U.S. Hispanic population grew 25.5%, compared to 6.9% growth for African Americans and 1.6% growth for non-Hispanic whites.

Cisneros also said that as Hispanic Americans do better economically, so will the businesses that serve this community, including Hispanic Radio. He thanked radio for their efforts to improve the Hispanic communities that they serve, and emphasized the power of Hispanic Radio to make a difference in the lives of its listeners.

On the second day of the conference, Interep organized and sponsored a Power of Hispanic Radio panel, entitled, ”The Medium Matters: Radio’s Role in the Hispanic Marketing Mix.” The panel discussed the important role that Hispanic Radio plays in the lives of today’s U.S. Hispanics, as well as what Hispanic Radio will need to do to remain competitive in a changing media environment.

The panel was moderated by Peter Remington, VP/GM, SBS, Los Angeles/San Francisco. Panelists included leaders in multicultural marketing with varied backgrounds and expertise, including: Alejandro Clabiorne, VP, Multicultural Director, MediaCom-NY; Jorge Goytortua, Regional Vice President Sales and Services, Mexicana Airlines; Laura J. Hernandez, Executive Director, Multicultural Marketing, AT&T; Steve Jett, National Car Advertising Manager, Toyota, Los Angeles; and Rosa Serrano, Sr. VP, Multicultural Account Director, Initiative-Atlanta.
